The most obvious association with the name Edam is its cheese. For centuries the well-known round Edam cheeses have been sent from Edam to all corners of the world. The first thing most people associate with the town of Edam is its cheese, and its weekly cheese markets are a popular tourist attraction. Nearby cheese warehouses keep alive the memory of a colorful past.

After the right to have a market Edam held commercial cheese markets till 1922. The cheese was brought to the market by local farmers with little boats. When the cheese was lifted out of the boat it was carried to the market by cheese carriers. At the market the cheese was shown to the merchants. After being tested for their quality the price was settled by propose and denial until there was an agreement about the price. After that the cheese was brought to a warehouse where it was kept until the quality was at its best.

This building dates back to 1778. Inside the shop is a big variety of different cheese made from different milk. Sheep, Goat, Smoked cheese, Cheese from different parts of the world. Edam Cheese got its name because it was made on the Farms in this part of Holland, and also because the recipe originated in Edam. Cheese Factories put the Cheese Farms out of business. EVERY SUMMER, there are 8 Cheese markets held here.

Cheese weighing hall in Edam is open to the public for free. Edam is a well-preserved small historic town situated some 15 KM north of Amsterdam. Edam was once big in shipbuilding and still is world famous in cheese making. It has a fine historic center with quaint bridges and walkways.
