Designed for Delight, Amsterdam

Designed for Delight vintage furniture

Well over 200 20th-century luxury appliances have been brought together by the Montreal Museum of Decorative Arts. During its successful tour, ‘Designed for Delight’ presents the work of a number of well-known designers, including Starck, Sottsass, Lebeau and Bakker. Experience into the world of vintage, retro and contemporary design: ranging from classic Scandinavian furniture to mid-century Italian lighting, modernist plastics, vintage and contemporary wallpapers and more, much more...

Austerity

Ever since the days of Berlage, Dutch design as been dominated by a preference for functionality, both in buildings and objects, with sober decorations and hardly any ‘frills’. At the same time, the love for form remained, partly thanks to the French art nouveau.

A random selection from the collection provides a colorful impression: a bracelet by Martinazzi, a champagne glass by Sípek, a vase by Picasso, a coffee-maker by Dalisi, a kettle by Starck, jewelry by Gijs Bakker, chairs and tables by Gehry, Mendini, Sottsass and many other designers.

Four themes

The exposition has been divided into four themes. ‘Body Language’ is inspired by the contours of the human body. ‘Transformation and Inversion’ presents highly imaginative objects. In ‘Fantasy on the run’ there are no restraints whatsoever. And ‘Decoration prohibited?’ shows numerous vases, dinner services and pieces of jewelry which Berlage certainly would not have approved of!

The former Exchange Building on Damrak is worth a visit in itself. You can conclude your visit to the exhibition by climbing the bell tower and enjoying the panoramic view of the colorful city of Amsterdam. They also have products as rental for in-store promotion, film-sets, commercials, lounge areas for fairs or seminars, furniture, lighting or any other form of styling and/or decorating.
