Galery 'Aan 't Glop', Zaanse Schans, Zaandam

Inside the Galery 'Aan 't Glop', Zaanse Schans, Zaandam

Seventeenth century front part of a house with eighteenth century house in the air shop with display cupboard from the 19th century; channeled wooden façade; roof supported by oaken pillars.

This fascinating gallery has been formed out of two different buildings; the shop dating from the 19th century, and a much older bookshop from Zaandam, dating 1630 and relocated to the Zaanse Schans in 1970. The lead glass windowpanes over the 'death door' and the bulkhead wood with chamfered edges are typical of the 17th century. The Gallery sells etches, fantasy articles and wooden toys.

On the river Zaan you will see an open area. From May up to and including September, a tour boat leaves from this open space every hour. Large open areas such as these used to be used as storage yards for cargoes. The building at the south side of this 'glop' used to be a bookshop - this was built in the nineteenth century.

The entrance hall dates from about 1630. The leaded windows over the death door and the timber front are typical for this period. The roof is, for the greater part, still supported by the bent trunks of oak-trees. The low, oblong living room is a copy of an eighteenth-century summerhouse. At that time, merchant families used their summerhouses mainly for relaxing during the summer. Part of the building is now used as a gallery.
