The motive of this popular Nine Streets watering hole is a mutt by the name of Karel. Apparently the pet of one of the bar’s former patrons, the giddy-looking canine epitomises the unwavering friendliness of this bar Whether you’re a tourist, a gap-toothed local or an Armani-clad criminal lawyer ((Jan, a regular, likes to unwind here alter a heavy day in the cells), De Pels and its fistful of beers - there are five on tap, including bar manager Jacques Lucassan’s favourite, Jupiler - is at your service.

Golden oldies courtesy of Van Morrison, Nina Simone and Elvis emanate from the ancient jukebox and the walls are covered floor-to-ceiling in vintage music posters, giving the impression of a benign explosion at the Paradiso. The hapjes menu may offer up the predictable greasy olives, chalky cheese cubes and miniature salamis that look like the work of a certain Mr Albert Heijn, but such piffling details matter not; in boozing terms, Cafe De Pels is man’s best friend.

Hours: Daily 10.00, Fri, Sat until 03.00.
