The mill “Het Pink” (The Yearling)

Mill “Het Pink” (The Yearling) in Koog aan de Zaan, Zaanstad, Zaandam

The mill “Het Pink” (The Yearling) was built in 1751, probably on an older foundation.

It is an octagonal bovenkruier (windmill of which only the cap is movable) with scaffolding, with a wingspread of 23 meters! For a Zaanse industrial-mill pretty huge wingspread. “Het Pink” is fit up as oil-mill. When the association “De Zaansche Molen” became owner of the mill in 1939 it was restored.

Het Pink (The Yearling) is an oil mill on the Pinkstraat in Koog aan de Zaan. Koog aan de Zaan is a town in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Zaanstad, and lies about 11 km northwest of Amsterdam. Koog aan de Zaan was a separate municipality until 1974, when the municipality of Zaanstad was created.

Once “Het Pink” was situated in a meadow-area, but that’s been build full nowadays, so people don’t notice the mill very quickly between the houses of Koog aan de Zaan. The mill before “Het Pink” was a “wip”-mill (a mill of which the complete upper-part turns with the wind), in North-Holland also called “koker”–mill.

Since the third of March, 1939 the former “Society for the Preservation of Windmills of the Zaan District” has been the owner of oil mill Het Pink (The Yearling). Hence this mill is in fact the first mill which belonged to the Society, now renamed “Society of Zaan Mills”. That is why it is not unusual that the mill Het Pink is considered by many to be an icon.

There still exists an image of it, which you can see in the eastern-barn of the mill. “Het Pink” had to deal with fire 2 times. In 1792 it burned because it grinded while it stormed, but they managed to keep the fire under control. And when in 1915 the lightning took in they managed to end the fire in the beginning.
