Nature Museum E. Heimans (Nature education centre) And Other Kids Activities In Zaandam
The Nature Museum E. Heimans holds collections of mammals, aquatic fauna, bones & teeth, insects, eggs, birds, curiosities and a museum archive. The permanent exposition has the theme 'Nature in the City'. The museum also informs on the flora and fauna of the peat bogs of the area of the Zaan. The collection holds specimens of mainly marine species and some freshwater species. In total about 300 objects, 80 species, of which 60 of shell (over 250 specimens). The others are of fish, crustaceans and a caiman. There are specimens in liquid of a young shark, a ray, a ray's bream, a sea-mouse and octopuses.
The E. Heimans nature museum has mainly an educational purpose. Children will understand in this museum what nature means to them. So there is a setup of a "Peatland" scenery, a grounds, a hut and a chamber. Scenery of set up animals is used to show the public how life in both the house and the district is related to nature. A lot of school leagues visits this museum. Society Nature and Environmental Education Zaanstreek manages a number of recreational and educational welfare facilities in Zaanstad, including the E. Heimans Nature Museum, the petting farm in the Darwinpark, the botanical threaded school gardens and a biological educational center.
Besides the natural history museum next to the Darwin Park Children’s farm you will find the largest zoo in the Netherlands with playground in neighborhood Poelenburg , in Zaandam- southeast. Near the main entrance of the farm there is also parking facilities on other side of the museum to Thijssestraat . E. Heimans Nature Education Centre and Museum is managed by the Foundation Nature and Environment Education Zaanstreek.
About The Foundation Nature and Environment Education Zaanstreek
The Foundation Nature and Environment Education Zaanstreek manages six different activities: school gardens, a botanical garden, a nature museum, a children's farm, a biology education centre and a nature and environment centre for the area of the Zaan. All six activities aim at the development of awareness, interest and skills to result in a nature and environment friendly atitude. The Botanical Garden, laid out in 1955, has species from the area of the Zaan but also holds plants from other regions in the Netherlands. The Nature Museum E. The Zaans Museum on the Zaanse Schans organizes on a regular basis special children’s activities. Kids can join in a “treasure hunt or other” in the little Zaans neighborhood. The Police Museum and other museums in Zaandam organizes guided tours catering for children. Reservations are necessary.
The ‘Adventures Play Ground’ (Avonturenspeelplaats) in The Twiske Recreation Area in Oostzaan is highly recommended with beautiful weather. Not to forget to mention ‘the Blue Gateway’ ('De Blauwe poort'), as well as special farm De Marsen with an animal pasture. Furthermore the Twiske has a number of little beaches and pasture playgrounds. There is also a visit to Zaangolf swimming pool in Koog aan de Zaan or Children’s Paradise Bal-lorig (Kinderspeelparadijs Bal-lorig) in Zaandam in poor weather. This is an indoor facility with lots of attractions such as climbing walls, slides, and ballenbakken (enclosure filled soft balls) etc
For the young ones a visit to a children’s farm is guaranteed highlight. In the Zaans district there are four children’s farms at different locations.
