Schonenborg Space Engineering BV

Schonenborg Space Engineering exists since 2002. Initially the company was established as an ‘eenmanszaak', but was converted into a B.V. in 2003.

The main areas of expertise are: development of flight hardware for the International Space Station for experimental as well as for supporting equipment; chemical propulsion engineering and the conduct of feasibility studies.

Several dozens of hardware items of varying complexity have been launched on various carriers since 2003 and have orbited the Earth 16 times a day on board the ISS. Several items also have been returned to ground for post flight analysis of experimental results.

Consultancy has been provided for a range of propulsion engineering activities as well as for the conduct of several feasibility studies.

Space activities

ISS related hardware activities include among; design, manufacturing, assembly, integration, verification, functional-, qualification-, and acceptance testing, provision of required documentation, crew training and support for scientific analysis.

The aim is to achieve all in a cost effective manner by keeping equipment as simple as possible and by using Commercial Off The Shelf components, thereby not compromising scientific and safety requirements.

Two examples of developed ISS experimental flight hardware are the Bone Proteomics experiment (Life sciences / human physiology) and the GraPhoBox experiment (Life sciences / plant biology).

Propulsion related activities involve the design (pre-phase A and phase A) of chemical propulsion systems for spacecraft and launch vehicles. The activities include analysis of mission requirements, making trade off's between different propulsion systems, designing baselined propulsion systems and components, deriving requirements for related disciplines, calculating mass budgets, providing inputs for cost, programmatic and risk analysis and reporting on results.

Two examples of designed propulsion systems are a bi-propellant satellite propulsion systems and a conceptual design of a heavy lift launch vehicle.

Feasibility studies relate to de- and re-orbiting of spacecraft and space architectural elements.
